Barfender Beginner Guide: Survive Your First Nights

Barfender: CO-OP Bar Simulator beginner guide — the serve-clean-defuse loop, what to buy first, and the mistakes that end a run early.

Barfender: CO-OP Bar Simulator (Steam Early Access, launched 2026-10-12) looks like a bar sim and plays like a chaos management game. Orders pile up, customers get drunk and impatient, glasses shatter, thieves walk in — and the night only ends when you hold the bar together. Here is the loop that keeps a new bar alive.

The core loop: serve, clean, defuse

Every night is the same three jobs competing for your attention:

  1. Serve drinks. Pour beers and shake cocktails to keep orders moving. Speed matters — customers left waiting turn frustrated, and frustrated customers tank your day (the Flawless Night achievement requires closing a day with 0 frustrated customers).
  2. Clean constantly. Spills, broken glass and puke drag the cleanliness meter down. The Mop Duty achievement asks you to never let cleanliness drop into yellow for a full day — treat messes as urgent, not cosmetic.
  3. Defuse incidents. Fights, thieves and choking customers are run-enders if ignored. Break up brawls before punches land (there is a Bouncer achievement for exactly that), stop thieves before they grab anything, and watch for choking customers — saving two in one day earns Heimlich.

Ignore any one of the three and the others collapse: mess makes customers angry, angry customers start fights, fights make more mess.

Your first nights, day by day

  • Day 1: Finish in the black (Open for Business achievement). Serve everything you can, buy nothing you don’t need.
  • Days 2–3: Learn the customer roster. Not everyone is a sale — the hobo asks for free drinks and money, and how you treat him is tracked across multiple achievements (see customer types).
  • By day 7: You hit Week One. By now you should have a rhythm: one player on drinks, one on floor duty if you play co-op.

What to spend on first

Purchase Why it matters Priority
Decorations Decoration points (Interior Decorator: hit 5) feed your bar rating Early
Licenses Licensed to Pour (own every license) gates drink variety Mid
Staff Extra hands once orders outpace you — see staff & upgrades Mid
Jukebox / instruments / arcade Long-tail upgrades with their own achievements Late

Honest gap: upgrade prices and exact rating math are still being documented by the community. We list systems we can confirm from the game and its achievement list; numbers get added as they are verified.

Co-op: split roles, don’t stack them

Online co-op is the game’s signature mode. The rookie mistake is two players doing the same job while the third job burns. Split explicitly:

  • One player pours and serves (and nothing else during rushes).
  • The other runs the floor: mop, trash, thrown items, brawls, thieves.

Thrown items are a real mechanic — a thrown item that hits two customers at once earns Two Birds, and yes, you can smash a beer mug into your teammate’s face. Whether you should is between you and your teammate.

Mistakes that end runs early

  • Letting puke sit. A puke that frustrates 5 customers at once is the Patient Zero achievement — for the game, not for you. Clean it now.
  • Chasing profit before stability. Three losing days followed by a profitable one is literally an achievement (Comeback Kid) — but you don’t want to live there.
  • Forgetting the clock. Serving a customer in the final 10 seconds of the night (Last Call) is fine; five unserved orders at closing is not.

Working toward 100%? The full list is on the achievements page.
